Before you book a wedding DJ, ask who will actually perform, what is included in the price, how they run the timeline as your MC, and what their backup plan is. The answers tell you more than any demo mix.
Why the questions matter more than the playlist
Almost every DJ can play the right songs. What separates a great wedding DJ is everything around the music: running your timeline, reading the room, handling the microphone and quietly fixing problems before anyone notices. These questions get to that fast.
About the person
1. Will you personally be my DJ? Many companies book you with the owner and send whoever is free. Get the name of the person who will be behind the booth in writing.
2. How many weddings have you done? Weddings are their own skill. Ask about weddings specifically, not just events.
3. Have you worked at my venue? If yes, ask what they learned there. If not, ask how they prepare for a new room.
4. Can I see you working a real event? Video from an actual reception beats a studio mix. Watch how they talk on the mic and how the floor responds.
About the night
5. How do you handle MC duties? Grand entrance, toasts, cake, last dance. Your DJ is the voice of the night, so their mic style should match your crowd.
6. How do you build the timeline with my planner? A great DJ coordinates with your planner, photographer and venue so every moment lands on time.
7. How do you take requests? Ask how they balance your must-play list, guest requests and reading the floor in real time.
8. Do you use a do-not-play list? The answer should be an immediate yes.
9. Can you cover the ceremony and cocktail hour too? Separate spaces need separate sound. Make sure it is planned, not improvised.
About the production
10. What sound and lighting is included? Ask for specifics: speakers, wireless mics, uplighting and anything like cold sparklers.
11. Who sets up and runs it? At DME every package includes an onsite manager plus sound and lighting engineers, so the DJ can focus on your guests.
12. What is your backup plan? Spare mics, spare gear and a plan if something fails. Professionals have one.
About the business
13. What exactly is included in the price? Delivery, setup, overtime and taxes should be clear up front. Ours are included.
14. Can we add live musicians? Sax, horns, drums or a violinist can turn a great DJ set into a show. Ask whether they can add live players without hiring a second company.
15. What happens after I book? Look for a clear planning process: music planning, a timeline review and a final check-in before the wedding.

Questions couples ask
When should I book my wedding DJ?
For spring and fall Arizona weddings, 12 to 18 months ahead gives you the best choice of dates.
Is a DJ or a band better for a wedding?
It depends on your crowd and venue. Many couples now choose a hybrid: a DJ with live musicians playing over the top.
Does DME include taxes and setup in its pricing?
Yes. Every DME wedding package includes delivery, setup, crew and taxes.
